Hi neighbors,

Some weeks just have a moment in them that makes everything else feel secondary.

This week, Lily and her fiancé Gunnar closed on their first home. I was there for the signing, and watching Lily sit across that closing table, the same kid I used to drive to school at Pine Lake Prep, was one of those moments that sneaks up on you.

Our friend Marzia was their agent, and what started as a professional relationship has quietly become something more. She was the right person to hand my daughter the keys to her first house, and having her be part of this chapter for our family meant a lot.

First comes the house. Then comes the wedding. The Hastings family is having quite a year.

Hope everyone has a great week.

🏚️ A piece of Cornelius cotton history is moving

The Gist: A historic tenant house at West Catawba Avenue and Westmoreland Road in Cornelius is being moved to a working farm in Huntersville. The relocation is being coordinated by River Rock Capital Partners, the town, Preserve Mecklenburg, and others.

Why It Matters: A tenant house was a simple home where farm workers lived while working land they did not own. This one was part of the old Alexander Farm, a cotton farm tied to J. Wilson Alexander and generations of North Mecklenburg farming history.

What’s Next: The house is expected to be restored and preserved at its new home, while a permanent exhibit and commemorative monument are planned at Alexander Farms to share the property’s history as development continues.

🏡 Troutman mapping out future growth plan

The Gist: Our Town Council and Planning Board just got a midpoint update on the 2055 Comprehensive Plan, a yearlong project expected to wrap up by the end of the year. So far, over 100 neighbors have shared 3,400 data points and 325 written comments to help shape how our town handles development.

Why It Matters: This plan is all about protecting our quiet, safe, small-town charm before rapid growth alters it completely. Neighbors are eager for better restaurants and less traffic, but town leaders point out that we can't get those new amenities without welcoming the housing growth needed to support them.

What's Next: You can share your thoughts during the next round of digital feedback this July, or attend the second community workshop tentatively scheduled in August.
